Cooperation between one of Germany’s leading legal publishers and Europe's sovereign Legal AI
Erich Schmidt Verlag's new AI tool, AILIA, combines the publisher's content with Noxtua's secure, European AI technology
AILIA will soon be launched with the complete commentary on the German Social Code (Hauck/Noftz) and the complete commentary on Public Employment Law (Fürst)
With AILIA, users will be able to use two of the publisher's important legal databases in dialog right from the start
BERLIN, June 23, 2025 – Erich Schmidt Verlag (ESV), one of the leading legal publishers in the German-speaking world, is cooperating with Europe's leading legal AI Noxtua. The publishing house, founded in 1924, is integrating its own AI tool AILIA into its database applications, based on its own verified specialist content and Noxtua's AI technology. The first AILIA-based offerings will soon go online on a technical and visual upgrade of Erich Schmidt Verlag's “ESV-Digital” content platform.
From the outset, subscribers can access two important legal databases from Erich Schmidt Verlag using the new AI tool. Besides the traditional AI keyword search, users can ask specific questions and engage with legal texts in a more nuanced way. Special AI integrations based exclusively on Noxtua's specialized language models and ESV's specialist content ensure the quality of the generated answers. While the AI-generated answers do not replace legal advice, they do provide expert support for legal research and text work.
Strong partnership with Noxtua
Technical partner for AILIA is Noxtua, the AI company that develops Europe's sovereign Legal AI based on proprietary, legally specialized AI models. Founded in Berlin in 2017 based on research conducted at Oxford University and Imperial College London, Noxtua focuses on creating powerful AI solutions that are grounded in European values such as transparency, data privacy, and the rule of law. The GDPR-compliant Legal AI meets the high professional and data protection requirements for lawyers (Section 203 German Criminal Code, Section 43e German Federal Code for Lawyers) and is certified according to ISO 27001, 9001, 27018, 27017, 42001, and BSI C5.
Trust through precision
"Precision is integral to the legal profession, particularly in the era of AI. Legal users in particular must be able to rely on the fact that the AI used in our services does not access arbitrary or questionable data, but rather qualified and verified sources from our publishing programme," emphasizes Dr Joachim Schmidt, Managing Director of Erich Schmidt Verlag. "We are delighted to have Noxtua as our partner — a highly recognized technology pioneer in the industry."
"Europe's strength lies in cooperation. As Europe's leading sovereign Legal AI, we are therefore delighted to be working with Erich Schmidt Verlag. As an important legal publisher in the German-speaking world with a broad customer base and a high level of legal expertise, the publishing house is a valuable partner for us. With our AI technology, we can make the publisher's specialist legal content available to users quickly and easily, helping them save time and resources," explains Dr Leif-Nissen Lundbæk, CEO & Co-Founder of Noxtua.
First applications on the ESV-Digital content platform
The first AILIA-enhanced databases will be available shortly ahead of the relaunch of the publishing platform at www.ESV-Digital.de. This will include the digital editions of the complete commentary on the German Social Code (Hauck/Noftz) and the complete commentary on German Public Employment Law (Fürst), both of which will be enriched with relevant case law. This case law will also be integrated into the AI embeddings and systematically linked.
