Legal AI Beck-Noxtua integrates content from German legal publisher Erich Schmidt

Cooperation underscores importance of independent publishing houses
  • Noxtua develops Europe's first and leading sovereign Legal AI

  • Strategic orientation of Erich Schmidt publishing house

  • Users benefit from broader coverage of exclusive legal literature and an expanded database in the Legal AI Workspace Beck-Noxtua

BERLIN, September 10, 2025 – Berlin-based AI scaleup Noxtua is integrating content on public service law from the German legal publishing house Erich Schmidt Verlag (ESV) into the Legal AI Workspace Beck-Noxtua, which the tech company is developing in collaboration with legal publisher C.H.Beck. Thanks to this cooperative approach and the addition of ESV content on public law, legal experts will soon benefit from even broader coverage of exclusive legal literature for their legal research, document analysis, and document creation.

With this strategic move, Noxtua is combining the content of C.H.Beck, Germany's largest legal publishing house, with the content of Erich Schmidt in a single offering. The collaboration between C.H.Beck, Erich Schmidt, and Noxtua emphasizes the high value of independent publishing houses, the great importance of high-quality legal content for legal work, and the indispensability of digital sovereignty for the legal system in Germany.

As one of the most renowned legal publishers in the German-speaking world, Erich Schmidt Verlag is particularly distinguished by its focus on public law, with leading commentaries on civil service law (Fürst) and social law (Hauck/Noftz). ESV also focuses on banking and capital market law as well as energy and environmental issues. The ESV content on civil service and collective bargaining law integrated into Beck-Noxtua offers users from public administration an expanded database for legal research.

Erich Schmidt and Noxtua recently announced that the scaleup's AI technology will be incorporated into the specialist publisher's AI tool AILIA. With the integration of ESV data in the field of public service law into the Legal AI Workspace Beck-Noxtua, the partnership between Noxtua and Erich Schmidt is taking the next strategic step.

Cooperation for competent and legally compliant AI

"Europe's model for success consists of strong partnerships – to paraphrase Aristotle, Europe is more than the sum of its parts. That is why we are also pursuing a cooperative approach with our sovereign Legal AI Noxtua, and we are delighted that the Erich Schmidt publishing house, another renowned specialist legal publisher, has now joined us. We firmly believe that powerful AI can be combined with data protection, sovereignty, and the rule of law. And our success proves us right," emphasizes Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk (CEO & Co-Founder of Noxtua)

"ESV content is used particularly in public administration. That is why we see it as our responsibility to support the performance of the state by providing high-quality legal content that is easy to use. On the other hand, compliance with high security standards and European sovereignty is essential for us. Noxtua, as Europe's sovereign AI, is therefore the ideal partner for us," explains Dr. Joachim Schmidt (Managing Director of Erich Schmidt Verlag).

"As Germany's largest legal publisher, it is very important to us that the publishing landscape remains diverse, even in the age of artificial intelligence. For this reason, we have deliberately not designed Beck-Noxtua as a ‘closed shop’, but offer publishers the opportunity to offer their content to a broad user base on an equal footing with Beck content as part of a content partnership. We are delighted that the Erich Schmidt publishing house has accepted this offer and is enriching our Legal AI Workspace with its valuable and often unrivalled content in specific areas of law," explains Prof. Dr. Klaus Weber (member of the general management of C.H.Beck).

Noxtua as Europe's first and leading sovereign legal AI

With Beck-Noxtua, legal experts can research legal issues, analyze documents, and have documents created in a legally competent and compliant manner.  The Legal AI Workspace is based on Noxtua's proprietary and sovereign AI models, which specialize in the legal domain. The GDPR-compliant legal AI also meets the high criminal, professional, and data protection requirements for lawyers (Section 203 German Criminal Code, Section 43e German Federal Code for Lawyers) and is certified according to ISO 27001, 9001, 27018, 27017, 42001, and BSI C5. The sovereign AI infrastructure, which is hosted entirely in Germany, and the high level of compliance with security requirements also allow professionals bound by professional secrecy to use it without additional anonymization. As a strategic partner, the publishing house C.H.Beck, founded in 1763, was among those who invested in the recently announced Series B financing round of around EUR 81 million in the AI scale-up Noxtua – the largest financing round in Europe to date in the field of legal AI.
